Cal Poly Pomona Summer Classes Cancelled Due to Budget Cuts

I'm a little late on posting this, but this was sent out to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community regarding the sudden cancellation this summer of their Summer Quarter classes:

CAL POLY POMONA CANCELS STATE-SUPPORTED SUMMER QUARTER CLASSES

The onset of massive budget cuts to the California State University (CSU) has forced Cal Poly Pomona to cancel state funding for the 2009 summer quarter. All classes that were scheduled to begin on June 15 and July 29 have been cancelled. Study abroad programs will continue as planned. University offices will remain open on the Monday-Thursday summer schedule.
To assist students who would like to take additional classes this summer, the university will offer a fee-based summer schedule through the College of the Extended University beginning on July 13. Classes will be five weeks in length. These fully transferrable accredited courses meet Cal Poly Pomona degree requirements. Financial aid in the form of Stafford Loans, Pell Grants, and Work Study may be available. Course costs are $220 per unit for lecture classes and $280 for lab-based classes. Details on the registration schedule will be announced next week.

“We are facing catastrophic cuts in funding, ones that will directly limit our ability to meet student needs for the 2009-10 academic year,” said President Michael Ortiz. “By suspending state funding for the summer, we can lessen the impact for the balance of the year.”

The CSU is facing budget shortfalls of $400-$700 million for the upcoming 2009-10 year. Cuts of this magnitude reflect the total combined budgets of Cal Poly Pomona and Sonoma State put together. For Cal Poly Pomona, our campus share of these cuts could translate to $20 million to $35 million.

Students who are newly admitted for summer quarter are eligible to register for the new summer session through the College of the Extended University and may register for fall quarter.

We need your feedback. Cal Poly Pomona has established a Summer ’09 web site and email address dedicated to answer your questions. If you are interested in attending summer courses through the College of Extended University, please go to the Summer ’09 web site and tell us your suggestions.
